Historic Downtown Summerville
Charming is the perfect description of Historic Downtown Summerville. With beautiful Hutchison Square, open stage, shaded park benches, statues, and lovely plantings, the Square is true relaxation just steps away from retail shops, restaurants, wine bars and the oldest operating Drug Store in SC (with great hot dogs!) Historic Downtown is a few short blocks from Flowertown B & B. You may not know it, but Summerville is the birthplace of Sweet Tea so be sure to have your photo taken in front of the World’s Largest Sweet Tea Mason Jar – making the Guinness Book of World Records. Hutchinson Square boasts a modern stage which frequently features artists and musicians from the region. With seasonal celebrations, there is always something going on downtown.
Summerville Farmers Market
Open every Saturday from April – November, the Summerville Farmers Market hosts dozens of vendors from 8 am – 1 pm. Everything from locally roasted coffee to fresh kettlecorn, coastal seafood, unique artwork, Gullah grass baskets and, of course, fresh fruits, vegetables and organic meat are available for purchase. Our favorite booth is the Cookie Chick – super fresh and the best almond, molasses and lemon cookies ever. Splurge like we do and buy a half-dozen. And let’s not forget the kettle corn – The Grants purchase one large bag every Saturday!
Sculpture in the South
A surprising number of sculptures are placed throughout Historic Downtown Summerville and parks. Azalea Park is 12+ acres and only two blocks from the B & B. The park boasts beautiful green space, hundreds of azalea bushes, crape myrtles and camelias, quaint bridges over a small stream, tennis courts, gazebos, and a unique collection of beautiful bronze sculptures. Definitely worth a stroll through the park.
Historic Downtown Summerville features life size sculptures sharing bench space with you in Hutchinson Square as well as the B.I.R.D.S program (Birds in Residence: Downtown Summerville). A major public art initiative created by the Audubon Center at Francis Beidler Forest, Sculpture in the South and Summerville D.R.E.A.M., 20+ life size birds overlook the downtown from their perches on rooftops, shop signs, balconies, etc. See if you can find all 23!!
